Grandma has sent you and your cousins up the mountain to the huckleberry patch to fill your buckets with huckleberries and bring them back down the mountain so she can bake a blue huckleberry pie. The object of the game is to get everybody up to the huckleberry patch, collect the buckets of berries and get everybody back to grandmas house before dark.
You begin your adventure with 4 edible, medicinal plants in your pack that can help you with certain problems that you might come across (stomach ache, sore muscles, hunger, wasp sting, etc). You collect more plants as you make your way up the mountain. You also collect “trouble cards”. The plants you collect will help you rid yourselves of these problems and move you up and down the mountain faster. Cooperation cards allow you to help someone else who has fallen behind or allows you to share your herbs with them if they have a trouble they cannot remedy.
You will find a video demonstration of playing Wildcraft at the end of this post.
There are moon spots.
Every time a player lands on a moon spot, you are 1 step closer to nighttime, so you don’t want to land on them!
This is where you draw a trouble card to find out what kind of trouble you are in.
Examples of some troubles you might run into:
There are also plant spots:
If you land on this spot you draw a plant card:
Each card has a different plant that can help you rid yourself of a trouble.
If you (or someone with a cooperation card) have a plant that matches one of the remedies on your trouble card, you discard both cards and move to the nearest resting spot:
When we first started playing, we didn’t notice these 2 particular rest spots that are a bit hidden. If you go down the waterfalls you either land on this rocky rest spot or go under the bridge and follow the waterfall to the next rest spot. This part confused us at first and we were going all the way back to grandmas house!
We absolutely love this game! I love that it gets everybody working together to reach a goal either everybody wins or no one does. I also love the knowledge you can gain about edible wild plants and their health benefits. The creators of the game, Learning Herbs, also have additional information on medicinal plants and herbs and exactly how to use them on their website and you can access a bonus story to get even more involved in the game at http://learningherbs.com/wildcraft-game. They are so knowledgable, I could spend hours on their website!
We had a little hiccup when we opened our game and we were a few game pieces short. I contacted Learning Herbs and they immediately responded and offered to mail me extra pieces which I received within a week. Excellent customer service! (Though we’re still short 1 huckleberry bucket, I must have miscounted when I called to get additional pieces. We have plenty of night pieces so we just use one of those for a huckleberry bucket lol)
What’s better? *A portion of the proceeds from purchasing Wildcraft goes to benefit United Plant Savers. Their mission is to protect native medicinal plants of the United States and Canada and their native habitat while ensuring an abundant renewable supply of medicinal plants for generations to come.*
