Every Monday we introduce you to a different homeschool family. Each family, just like you, has their own unique story and their own reasons and methods of homeschooling.
Please welcome the Frerichs family from Kerrville, TX! Mom: Misty, Dad: Jerrold, and their kids: Thomas Young age 16, Katherine Young age 14 and Mason Frerichs age 8.
Q: How long have you been homeschooling for?
A: We started at the beginning of November (begrudgingly).
Q: What made to choose to homeschool?
A: Well, over the years we had noticed education standards had lowered but homeschooling never entered into our thoughts. Our younger son is ADHD and ODD so he is a challenge for most everyone. His school life was fine in kindergarten but first grade we went through our first Med change. It was horrible to say the least! Topped with a Teacher that did not understand that his mental issues were not personal. She really did damage to him. When we hit second grade, still not finding the proper meds, he had developed a reputation of being a “bad child” so tolerance was not afforded to Mason. Little problems became huge issues that resulted in no recess. The final straw for us was the bus. He went all the way through The beginning of November with no problems. But he had a bad Friday and received a write up for being up in his set. We were informed on the next Wednesday of the write up, was told the next one would result in a 6 week removal from the bus. By the time he came home that afternoon he had gotten that write up. So we were not allowed the opportunity to correct the issue. We are a one car family. My husband is a full time student. So that Monday Mason did not go to school. In the middle of his many melt downs that day I decided I was pulling him. We started homeschooling the next day.
Q: Oh wow! So mason is the only homeschooler? Do your other children attend public school?
A: Yes! Thomas will be in 11th this coming year and Katherine will be in 10th.
Q: We’re friends/family supportive in your decision to homeschool Mason?
A: Yes, they were. We are lucky in that aspect! The ones that may not agree have opted not to share their thoughts.
Q: What is the biggest or most positive change you have seen in Mason since beginning to homeschool?
A: Oh gosh! Many. Ok, first he has more confidence in himself! His reading, math, and Science has improved, he also is typing and has a decent understanding of American politics. He is more incline to try new stuff. In fact the moment we told Mason we were going to homeschool we could physically see the the stress leave his body. It was like a weight had been lifted. Our relationship is also much better.
Q: So, what kinds of methods or curriculum (if any) are you using in your schooling?
A: This last year at first I tried Easy Peasy. I did not like it. So we mixed and matched! For math we did spectrum, english was spectrum too, we do sequential spelling we did unit studies for Science and social studies. We also try to do more learning through adventure.
Q: What are your (and Mason’s) favorite thing about homeschooling?
A:We love the freedom! We love being able to add whatever he is interested in all aspect of of his education. He loves that he can move around and not have to sit in a desk. He loves co-op class. He also loves the recess in between subject.
Q: what (if any) struggles did you face at the beginning?
A: In the beginning the biggest struggle was my self confidence, trying to make homeschooling like public school, and the power struggle between him and I.
Q: What is your favorite thing to do as a family?
A: We love anything to do with water! River, pool, Ocean!
Q: If the people reading this were to visit your area what are the places you would tell them they MUST see?
A: Here we have a few things that are must sees. Louise Hays Park is one. It has bike riding, river swimming, kayaking, hiking, and play park. Next scenic drive from Kerrville to Medina the drive offers winding road with lots of scenery. Last shopping in Fredricksburg.
Q: Is there anything else you would like to say to someone considering homeschool?
A: I would just add that anyone can homeschool! If your considering homeschooling but worried about what ifs stop, breath and take the leap! A amazing adventure is waiting for you!
